Our goal is to harness the strength of collaboration and collective action to confront entrenched systems and drive meaningful reform. We believe in demystifying and challenging coercive legal tools to dismantle structures perpetuating injustice and disadvantaging marginalized populations. Through grassroots organizing, education, and empowerment, we strive to create a more just and inclusive society where everyone's rights are respected and protected.
Our vision is to create a dynamic and inclusive community at UConn Law and in Hartford, where every individual is empowered to advocate for justice and equality. Through collaboration and activism, we strive to dismantle systemic barriers, promote social and economic empowerment, and cultivate a future where fairness and opportunity prevail.
We foster communities dedicated to resisting corporate dominance within the legal profession. We reject the notion that Big Law is the sole path for aspiring lawyers, instead promoting economic justice careers, particularly in the plaintiffs’ bar. By amplifying the voices of economic justice lawyers, advocating for improved loan forgiveness options, and raising awareness about the detrimental impact of corporate legal practices, we empower law students to pursue meaningful work that aligns with their values, ensuring they leave law school equipped to fight for economic justice.
We're dedicated to amplifying the presence of pro-people lawyers as judges, setting a new standard for progressive judicial nominees and collaborating with exceptional legal professionals to ensure their successful appointments to the federal bench. Continuing this advocacy, we hold the Lamont administration accountable for appointing pro-people judges, advocating at every opportunity. By increasing the representation of pro-people judges, we're reshaping the landscape of justice and fostering a culture where careers in public interest are seen as avenues for advancement, not limitations.
We recognize the federal judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, as a significant barrier to progress, capable of striking down or narrowing legislation enacted by elected officials. In the short term, our focus lies on nominating and confirming pro-people judges and expanding the Supreme Court to restore balance. However, we acknowledge that these measures alone are insufficient. The Supreme Court lacks democratic legitimacy and has a history of reactionary decisions. Thus, we advocate for shifting power away from unelected elites and towards democratically accountable actors. To achieve this, we undertake three key roles: bringing together stakeholders to develop strategies with popular support, leading discussions on the role and power of the courts, and mobilizing a movement for concrete reforms. Through these efforts, we aim to mitigate immediate harm while fostering a long-term solution to prevent recurring challenges from an undemocratic judiciary.
